May 19, 1999, From Star-K:
The Star-K has become aware that the following possible design flaws may
exist in Kitchen Aid ovens with the Sabbath mode feature:
Sparking may occur in some ovens when the oven door is opened and closed even
when the oven has been set to the Sabbath mode. For those ovens with the door
plunger switch (this switch also controls the oven light) located on the
upper right of the door frame, tape down the plunger switch using a double
layer of metal foil tape before Shabbos or Yom Tov. This tape is available in
auto supply stores. The tape should be removed when the Sabbath mode feature
is turned off and should never be left on during a self cleaning cycle.
NOTE: On Yom Tov, only raise the oven temperature when the heating element
icons are displayed and only lower the temperature when those icons are off.
On Shabbos no temperature adjustment is permitted.
For Kitchen Aid models in which the plunger is located in the center of the
door it is not feasible to tape down the plunger.
For Yom Tov use, please contact the Star-K office for a set of instructions
that will allow use of the Sabbath mode on Yom Tov. For keeping food warm on
Shabbos, the Star-K recommends shutting the oven completely off (not Shabbos
mode) before Shabbos and keeping the oven light on. The heavy insulation on
these models should adequately keep the food warm. Keep the oven light on so
that opening and closing the door will have no effect and make sure that no
icons flash on the display when opening and closing the oven door.
In some Kitchen Aid double ovens when one oven is in Sabbath mode and the
other is not, opening the door of the non-Sabbath oven will cause the display
to blink. Therefore, do not open the non-Sabbath mode oven on Shabbos and Yom
Tov.
The Star-K wishes to reassure all individuals who have purchased Kitchen Aid
ovens and ranges expecting to take advantage of the Sabbath mode feature that
they are vigorously pursuing this matter with Kitchen Aid officials. They
expect that consumer concerns regarding the Sabbath mode feature will be
satisfactorily resolved. They will also regularly publicize all progress
being made on the above mentioned issues.
If you own one of these ovens, please provide the Star-K office
(410-484-4110) with your name, address, phone number, fax number and/or
e-mail address so that they can keep you informed. In addition, the Star-K
web site Star-K website will contain updated information.
